Thursday, April 21 · 6-8pm

Chicago, Illinois

At the age of 17, Angela was abducted at knifepoint outside a suburban shopping mall. She was assaulted by a repeat sex-offender on parole for murder. Eventually released by her attacker, she then suffered at the hands of authorities who subjected her to scrutiny, blame and additional victimization. From this tragic story emerged one of the nation’s most passionate and impactful advocates for the prevention of sexual violence.

Angela’s efforts have been profiled by CNN, The Today Show, TIME Magazine, The Montel Williams Show, The John Walsh Show, CosmoGirl, Girl’s Life magazine and in newspapers nationwide.

There are three updates that I wanted to address today: our 501-3c status, our event structure for this year and our online presence.

Our organization has decided to remain an education organization and not pursue our 501-3c status. We have decided to focus our energy on our core: education. Education should be free and we want to keep it that way. All of our events will remain free. During our events we will team up with a 501-3c nonprofit that relates to our speakers topic. All donated money will go directly to that 501-3c charity. Our goal is to help promote stories and raise awareness for great causes.

Our event structure for this year will be a little bit different from last year: we listened to our community and we heard YOU! We will be hosting 4 larger events this year. We are expanding into local college campuses as well. One thing we can promise: the events will be educational, fun and everyone will leave wanting more SFANF!

SFANF has also started working on our online presence. We have received many stories from people around the city throughout 2010. Unfortunately, we only have limited events and that is why we decided to spend some time building an online community where people can share their stories. If everyone is living online now a days so should SFANF right?

We are excited for 2011! If you have any questions email me at ksmith@anewfriend.org. Remember, everyone has a story to tell and we can all learn from each other. We look forward to seeing you at our first event in April! Details to come.

Story From Caesar Hill http://anewfriend.org/wp/2010/10/26/story-from-caesar-hill/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=story-from-caesar-hill http://anewfriend.org/wp/2010/10/26/story-from-caesar-hill/#comments Wed, 27 Oct 2010 03:12:21 +0000 Administrator http://anewfriend.org/wp/?p=310 November 11, 2010 – On Veteran’s Day, former Navy lieutenant Caesar Hill shared his story describing his commitment to help homeless veterans get off the street and rebuild their lives. He understands the problems these people face, because he was once one of them. Hill had an excellent employment history in Chicago city government and later in the school system, but found himself out of work and living in a car at one point in 2004. A police officer found Hill that winter and encouraged him to go to the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, which Hill called home, off and on, for 19 months.

Hill’s outloook was permanently changed by his experience on the street. “I feel like I’ve rejoined normal society,” he said, “My life mission has changed, and that is to try to prevent anyone from having to go through this experience.” Since late 2007 Hill has worked full-time to coordinate programs and services with community organizations, the police department, development agencies, local businesses, health care providers and more. This event was co-hosted by Lincoln Park Community Shelter.

The Gift of Being Known http://anewfriend.org/wp/2010/07/21/the-gift-of-being-known/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-gift-of-being-known http://anewfriend.org/wp/2010/07/21/the-gift-of-being-known/#comments Wed, 21 Jul 2010 23:53:50 +0000 Administrator http://anewfriend.org/wp/?p=248 Past speaker and good friend Anne Marie Schlekeway had kind words about our organization after her experience at the most recent Story From a New Friend board meeting. Some of our favorite quotes are below.

“Here’s what I like about them…they are a group of hip young professionals who already understand that working and waltzing through life is not enough. They want to be fulfilled, satisfied and leave their mark on society.”

“I have seen their events make a profound impact first hand: One young woman spoke about surviving her father’s suicide and from her telling her story a man in the audience found the strength to continue with his life when he had been comtemplating ending it.”

“They would never be so gauche as to say they are creating world peace, but in my view that’s exactly what they are setting the foundation for – a community that fosters peace, love and understanding through intimate communication.”

“Giving someone the gift of BEING KNOWN is a priceless and beautiful thing. I know because it is the gift they have given me.”
